Macbeth
by William Shakespeare

One of his best known tragedies, the central action of the play begins when Macbeth and another Scottish general, Banquo, on their victorious return from war, encounter three witches. The witches predict that Macbeth will be made a nobleman, the Thane of Cawdor, and will ultimately become the King of Scotland. The excessive ambition of Macbeth and his wife lead them to kill the current king and blame his sons. Macbeth acquires the throne, but the task of keeping the crown leads to more blood being spilt. The three witches prophesy that Macbeth will maintain his rule unless three unusual events come true.  It is an unlikely personal secret of another nobleman, Macduff, which ultimately dooms this most corrupt of Scotland's Kings.
